Lewis and Wood
Eccentric, gentle, sophisticated, with an intrinsically English History
Another of our co-owner Kim Hanks’ design crushes, Lewis & Wood was established in 1993 as a creative collaboration between textile printer Stephen Lewis and interior designer Joanna Wood. Based in Woodchester Mill, a magnificent building in the Stroud Valleys just 14 miles from The Old Bell Hotel, Lewis and Wood is known for the individual character of its wallpapers. They have a wealth of designs all printed locally, including quirky florals, charming pictorials of the English countryside and folksy styles.
“We do put a lot of effort into being different.” Stephen Lewis
Anna French for Thibaut
Big, bold, and full of boutique charm
With over 30 years experience in the design world, Anna French is renowned for her innovative yet classic design. Anna’s business is driven by her determination to remain both bold and original. From her courageous use of colour in the vibrant prints she produced in art school in the 1960’s to her latest wallpaper and fabric collections, she embodies the movement, form and patterns of the environments which surround her.
“Wallpaper in London is hot. And in America it is making a comeback. My striking wallpapers are an essential backdrop to glamorous living,”
Anna French for Thibaut
Jane Churchill
Timeless elegance and an essentially English aesthetic
Based in Mayfair, London, the Jane Churchill studio is overseen by design director Sarah MacGregor. The brands annual collections and sophisticated designs are created using contemporary printing and weaving techniques. Their range of fabrics and textured wallpapers strongly influenced by Indienne (a type of printed or painted textile manufactured in Europe between the 17th and the 19th centuries, inspired by similar textile originally made in India) paisley, Persian and botanical documents
Melissa White
Historic, artisanal with a painterly feel that has its roots in the wall paintings of old.
Melissa White designs and hand paints incredible surface patterns at her studio in Hastings on the Sussex Coast of England. Coming to the world of decorative interiors in a rather unconventional way, Melissa has a background of reproducing Elizabethan wall paintings and painted cloths in the tradition of craftsmens known as 'painter stainers'. Her signature paintwork is often finished with ageing and distressing to distance it from the new and the mass produced. We were delighted to welcome Melissa as a guest to The Old Bell Hotel over the summer!
“One of my biggest design crushes, meeting Melissa was a dream come true!”

Zardi& Zardi
Original designs inspired by beautiful historic tapestries
Zardi and Zardi was founded in 2004 by P J Keeling, his aim being to showcase the historic beauty of tapestries by creating a range of high-quality decorative wall hangings on natural linen. The stunning colourways and designs produced by Zardi and Zardi are often inspired by the dramatic backdrop of the rolling hills of the Five Valleys in the Cotswolds where their studio is located
“Zardi and Zardi have produced pieces for many historic houses and organisations including Kensington Palace, Blenheim Palace, Warwick Castle, The National Trust and English Heritage, so we knew their wallpapers would be perfect match for the interiors here at England’s Oldest Hotel!”
