Malmesbury Midwinter Break

The Oldest Borough in England

Malmesbury, Queen of hilltop towns, used to be the capital of England. Set amongst beautiful green countryside with a wide range of things to see and do and really close to the Old Bell Hotel.
As the oldest recorded borough in England according to the Guinness Book of Records, there is so much history to explore such as Malmesbury Abbey which is our close neighbour. The 12th century Abbey is visible from miles around and is the jewel of the town of Malmesbury with over 65,000 visitors every year. The impressive architecture, rich history, religious prominence, and exciting events calendar ensure that it’s time well spent here.
Along the River Avon, via the footpath by 18 Gloucester Street, is a depression called ‘Daniel’s Well’. The name is derived from a monk called Daniel who is said to have submerged himself in the cold water every day for decades to quell his fiery passions! This took place at the dyke just outside the town, where a small footbridge can now be found.
It is now a popular place for dog walking.
